Popcorn in Air Fryer (How to Make It Safely)

Yes, you can make popcorn in an air fryer: fresh, hot, with just a teaspoon of oil and no microwave bag. But it works better in some machines than others, so read the safety notes before you start.

Prep 2 min
Air fry 6–8 min
Temperature 200 °C (400 °F)
Makes About 4 cups from ¼ cup kernels

Before you start: is your air fryer suitable?

  • Check your manual. Some manufacturers advise against popcorn, because light kernels can be blown up towards the heating element.
  • Basket models with a guard over the heating element work best.
  • Your air fryer must reach 200 °C (400 °F). Kernels won’t pop reliably below that.
  • Stay with it. Popcorn is not a walk-away recipe.

Ingredients

  • ¼ cup popcorn kernels (makai ke dane)
  • 1 tsp oil (coconut or any neutral oil) or melted ghee
  • Salt, and your choice of seasoning (see below)

How to make popcorn in the air fryer

  1. Line the basket with a piece of foil, folding up the edges to make a shallow tray. This stops kernels falling through the holes. Leave a gap around the sides for airflow.
  2. Coat the kernels with the oil and spread them in a single layer on the foil.
  3. Air fry at 200 °C (400 °F) for 6–8 minutes. Don’t preheat with the empty foil inside.
  4. Listen. When popping slows to one pop every 2–3 seconds, stop. Waiting for the last kernel burns the rest.
  5. Season straight away while hot so the seasoning sticks. Remove any unpopped kernels.

Seasoning ideas

Flavour Toss with
Classic salted Fine salt + a little melted butter or ghee
Masala Chaat masala + kashmiri chilli + pinch of black salt
Peri-peri Chilli flakes, garlic powder, oregano, pinch of sugar
Caramel-style Melted jaggery + ghee (toss quickly and spread to cool)
Cheese Cheese powder or finely grated parmesan

Troubleshooting

  • Lots of unpopped kernels: your air fryer may not get hot enough, or the kernels are old and dry. Use a fresh pack.
  • Kernels flying around: use a deeper foil tray, a small oven-safe dish, or a wire rack over the kernels.
  • Burnt smell: remove as soon as popping slows. Kernels near the element brown fastest.

Frequently asked questions

Can you make popcorn in an air fryer?

Yes, in most basket air fryers that reach 200 °C. Use a foil tray, 1 tsp oil and 6–8 minutes, and check your manual first.

Can I make microwave popcorn bags in an air fryer?

No. Microwave popcorn bags aren’t designed for dry heat and can scorch. Use plain kernels.

Why didn’t my popcorn pop in the air fryer?

The temperature was too low, or the kernels were stale. Make sure your model reaches 200 °C.
