Quick answer: Air fry fresh green beans at 200°C (400°F) for 8–10 minutes with 1 tsp oil per 250 g, shaking halfway, until blistered and tender-crisp. Frozen green beans go in straight from frozen for 12–14 minutes at the same temperature. They’re about 31 kcal per 100 g raw (USDA), so the oil is most of the added calories.
Crispy, blistered green beans (French beans) are one of the fastest side dishes an air fryer makes — no boiling, no blanching, and only a teaspoon of oil. Below are the basic method, a desi beans poriyal-style version, a garlic-parmesan version, and timings for fresh and frozen beans. It’s part of our air fryer vegetables guide.
| Prep | 5 min |
| Air fry | 8–10 min (fresh) · 12–14 min (frozen) |
| Temperature | 200°C (400°F) |
| Serves | 2–3 as a side |
| Oil | 1–2 tsp |
Ingredients
- 250 g fresh green beans (French beans), trimmed
- 1–2 tsp oil (mustard, groundnut or olive)
- ¼ tsp salt
- ¼ tsp black pepper
- ½ tsp garlic powder or 2 cloves garlic, finely chopped
- Lemon wedge, to serve
How to make green beans in the air fryer
- Preheat the air fryer to 200°C for 3 minutes.
- Wash, trim and dry the beans completely. Wet beans steam instead of blistering.
- Toss in a bowl with oil, salt, pepper and garlic powder. (If using fresh garlic, add it for the last 3 minutes only — it burns.)
- Spread in the basket in a loose layer, no more than half full.
- Air fry 8–10 minutes, shaking at 4 minutes, until browned in spots and tender-crisp.
- Squeeze lemon over and serve hot.

3 ways to flavour air fryer green beans
1. Desi beans poriyal-style
Toss with 1 tsp coconut oil, ¼ tsp haldi and salt, and air fry as above. Meanwhile, in a small pan, crackle ½ tsp mustard seeds, a few curry leaves and 1 dried red chilli in 1 tsp oil. Toss the hot beans with the tadka and 2 tbsp grated coconut. (Add curry leaves in the pan, not the air fryer — loose leaves fly into the heating element.)
2. Garlic parmesan
After cooking, toss with 2 tbsp grated parmesan and return to the basket for 1 minute so it melts and crisps.
3. Crispy breaded green bean “fries”
Dip beans in a thin besan or egg wash, then roll in panko or crushed cornflakes. Spray with oil and air fry at 200°C for 8–10 minutes, turning once. Serve with mint chutney or garlic mayo.

Frequently asked questions
Do you need to blanch green beans before air frying?
No. Fresh beans cook through in 8–10 minutes in the air fryer. Blanching only adds moisture, which works against crispness.
Can you air fry frozen green beans?
Yes — straight from frozen, at 200°C for 12–14 minutes, shaking every 4 minutes. Add oil and seasoning halfway, once surface ice has evaporated.
Why are my air fryer green beans soggy?
Usually too many in the basket, or beans still wet from washing. Dry them well and cook in a loose single layer.
How do I reheat leftover green beans?
3–4 minutes at 180°C brings back the crisp edges.
