Air Fryer Whole Chicken (Juicy Tandoori-Style Roast)

Quick answer: Air fry a 1.2–1.5 kg whole chicken at 180°C (360°F) for 50–60 minutes, breast-side down for the first 30 minutes, then breast-side up. It’s done when the thickest part of the thigh reads 74°C (165°F) on a thermometer. Rest it for 10 minutes before carving. You need a basket of at least 5.5–6 L with room for air around the bird.

A whole chicken in the air fryer comes out with crisp, browned skin and juicy meat in under an hour — faster than an oven, with no preheating wait. This version uses a tandoori-style curd marinade, with a simple butter-and-herb option too. It’s part of our air fryer dinner recipes.

Prep 15 min + 2 hours marinating (or overnight)
Air fry 50–60 min
Rest 10 min
Temperature 180°C (360°F)
Serves 4
Basket size 5.5 L or larger

Will a whole chicken fit in my air fryer?

Chicken weight Minimum basket Time at 180°C
0.9–1 kg 4.5–5 L 40–45 min
1.2–1.5 kg 5.5–6 L 50–60 min
1.6–2 kg 7 L+ or oven-style 60–75 min

Leave about 2–3 cm between the chicken and the heating element, and space around the sides for air. If the bird touches the element, use a smaller chicken or cut it in half (spatchcock). Times are guides only — always check the temperature. For larger families, see the best large capacity air fryers.

Ingredients

Chicken

  • 1 whole chicken, 1.2–1.5 kg, skin on, cleaned and patted dry
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice + 1 tsp salt (first marinade)

Tandoori marinade

  • ¾ cup thick hung curd
  • 1½ tbsp ginger-garlic paste
  • 2 tsp Kashmiri chilli powder
  • 1 tsp garam masala
  • 1 tsp roasted jeera powder
  • ½ tsp haldi
  • 1 tsp kasuri methi, crushed
  • 1 tbsp mustard oil
  • Salt to taste

How to cook a whole chicken in the air fryer

  1. Score and season. Make 3–4 deep cuts in the breasts and thighs. Rub with lemon juice and salt, and rest for 15 minutes.
  2. Marinate. Mix the tandoori marinade and rub it all over and inside the cavity. Refrigerate for at least 2 hours, ideally overnight.
  3. Tie and dry. Tie the legs together and tuck the wing tips under. Wipe off excess marinade — thick, wet marinade drips and smokes.
  4. Preheat to 180°C for 3–5 minutes.
  5. Cook breast-side down for 30 minutes. This keeps the breast meat juicy while the back browns.
  6. Flip breast-side up (use tongs and a spatula), brush with a little oil and cook another 20–30 minutes.
  7. Check the temperature in the thickest part of the thigh, not touching bone: it must read 74°C (165°F). If not, add 5 minutes and check again.
  8. Rest for 10 minutes, loosely covered, then carve. Serve with onion rings, lemon and green chutney.

Simple butter-herb version

Skip the curd marinade. Mix 2 tbsp soft butter with 1 tsp garlic paste, 1 tsp dried oregano or thyme, ½ tsp black pepper and 1 tsp salt. Rub under and over the skin, then cook exactly as above.

Food safety

  • Cook all poultry to a minimum internal temperature of 74°C (165°F), the US government’s safe minimum for whole birds and parts. Browned skin is not a sign of doneness.
  • Reheat leftovers to 74°C (165°F) as well — about 5–6 minutes at 180°C for pieces.
  • Don’t rinse raw chicken under the tap; it spreads bacteria around the sink. Pat it dry with paper towels instead.

Tips for crisp skin

  • Pat the skin completely dry before marinating, and wipe off excess marinade before cooking.
  • Add 2–3 tbsp water to the drawer under the basket to stop dripping fat from smoking (see why does my air fryer smoke).
  • Don’t cover the basket with foil. If the top browns too fast, lay a small piece of foil over the breast only, tucked so it can’t lift.
  • For extra char, finish at 200°C for the last 5 minutes.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a whole chicken take in an air fryer?

About 50–60 minutes at 180°C for a 1.2–1.5 kg chicken, or roughly 20 minutes per 500 g. Always confirm with a thermometer.

Do you flip a whole chicken in the air fryer?

Yes — start breast-side down, then flip halfway. It browns evenly and keeps the breast moist.

Can I air fry a frozen whole chicken?

No. Thaw it fully in the fridge first (about 24 hours per 2 kg). A frozen bird cooks unevenly, and the centre may not reach a safe temperature.

What size air fryer do I need for a whole chicken?

At least 5.5–6 L for a 1.2–1.5 kg chicken. Smaller baskets fit a 1 kg bird or chicken pieces.
