Crispy golden French fries in an air fryer basket

Frozen Fries in Air Fryer: Time Chart by Cut (No Thawing)

Quick answer: Cook frozen French fries in the air fryer at 200°C (400°F) for 12–16 minutes, straight from frozen — no thawing and no extra oil. Spread them in a single layer, preheat for 3 minutes, and shake the basket every 5 minutes. Thin fries need 10–12 minutes; thick-cut and steak fries need 16–20.

Frozen fries are already par-fried, so the air fryer only has to heat them through and re-crisp the outside. That makes them one of the easiest things you’ll ever cook in it. This page covers time and temperature by cut, how much to load, and why they sometimes come out soft. For homemade fries from fresh potatoes, see our main air fryer French fries guide.

How to cook frozen fries in an air fryer

  1. Preheat to 200°C for 3 minutes (how to preheat).
  2. Don’t thaw. Thawed fries go limp and stick together. Cook straight from the freezer.
  3. Load a single layer, or no more than half-full. About 250 g fits a 4 L basket in one go.
  4. Skip the oil. Most frozen fries are par-fried in oil already. A light spray is optional for extra colour.
  5. Cook and shake every 4–5 minutes so the pieces at the bottom crisp too.
  6. Season immediately after cooking, while the surface is still slightly oily, so salt and masala stick.

Frozen fries time chart (by cut)

Times are for a standard 4–6 L basket air fryer at 200°C (400°F), half-full and shaken. Start checking 2 minutes early: smaller, higher-wattage machines run faster.

Cut Temperature Time Shake
Shoestring / thin fries 200°C / 400°F 10–12 min Every 4 min
Regular straight-cut 200°C / 400°F 12–16 min Every 5 min
Crinkle-cut 200°C / 400°F 14–16 min Every 5 min
Steak / thick-cut 200°C / 400°F 16–20 min Every 5 min
Waffle fries 200°C / 400°F 10–14 min Twice
Potato wedges (frozen) 200°C / 400°F 16–20 min Twice
Sweet potato fries (frozen) 190°C / 375°F 12–15 min Every 4 min
Hash brown patties 200°C / 400°F 10–12 min Flip once

How many frozen fries can you cook at once?

Basket size Frozen fries per batch Serves
2–3 L 150–200 g 1
4–4.5 L 250–300 g 2
5–6 L 350–450 g 3–4
Dual basket 250–300 g per basket 4

Overfilling is the number-one reason fries come out soft. Two quick batches beat one crowded one — and the first batch reheats in 1–2 minutes when the second is done.

Why are my frozen fries not crispy?

  • Too many in the basket — steam gets trapped. Cook in batches.
  • They were thawed — surface ice turns to water and they go limp.
  • Not shaken — the bottom layer steams.
  • Temperature too low — frozen fries need the full 200°C.
  • Not preheated — a cold start adds steam time.

Desi masala for frozen fries

Toss hot fries in a bowl with ½ tsp chaat masala, ¼ tsp Kashmiri chilli powder, a pinch of amchur and salt to taste. For peri-peri style, use 1 tsp peri-peri mix. Add masala after cooking, not before — spices scorch at 200°C.

Are air-fried frozen fries healthier?

Usually, yes, because you’re not adding a second round of oil. Frozen fries are par-fried at the factory, so they still contain some fat; the label on the pack tells you how much. Air frying adds none, whereas deep-frying them again adds more. Also cook to golden, not dark brown: the US FDA notes that browner potato surfaces tend to contain more acrylamide. Frequently asked questions

Do you need to thaw frozen fries before air frying?

No. Cook from frozen for the crispest result.

Do you put oil on frozen fries in the air fryer?

It isn’t necessary — they’re already par-fried. A light spray adds colour if you want it.

Can I put foil under frozen fries?

It’s better not to; foil blocks airflow and the bottoms stay soft. If you want a liner, use perforated parchment. See can you put foil in an air fryer.

How do you reheat leftover fries in the air fryer?

3–4 minutes at 180°C, shaken once. They come back far crisper than in a microwave.
