Air Fryer Snacks: Indian & Easy Snacks (Samosa, Pakoda, Tikki & More)

Quick answer: The best air fryer snacks are the ones that are normally deep-fried — samosa, paneer pakoda, veg cutlet, potato wedges, banana chips — plus naturally crunchy ones like roasted chana, peanuts and makhana. Most cook at 180–200°C in 8–15 minutes with ½ tsp to 1 tbsp of oil per batch instead of a kadai of oil. Times for each are below.

Chai-time snacks are where an air fryer pays for itself. You get the crunch of a kadai-fried pakoda or samosa with a brushed-on spoon of oil, no oil to reuse or throw away, and far less mess. Here are our tested Indian and everyday air fryer snacks, with temperature, time and oil for each. It’s part of our air fryer recipes collection.

Air fryer vs kadai: the oil difference

Deep-frying a batch of pakodas or samosas means heating a kadai of oil, and food absorbs a share of it as it fries. In the air fryer you brush or spray on ½ tsp to 1 tbsp for the whole batch. One tablespoon of oil is about 120 kcal (USDA FoodData Central), so the saving per batch is easy to see. You also avoid reheating and reusing frying oil, which breaks down each time it’s heated. Tips for crispier air fryer snacks

  • Use a thick coating, not a thin batter. Runny pakoda batter drips through the basket. Make a thick paste, or coat in besan, cornflour or breadcrumbs.
  • Brush oil on the surface. Samosa and cutlet tops need a light coat of oil to turn golden.
  • Single layer, then shake or flip halfway.
  • Use a liner for sticky snacks like cheese and stuffed mirch — a perforated parchment sheet works best.
  • Reheat leftovers in the air fryer: 4–5 minutes at 170°C brings samosas and pakodas back to crisp.

Frequently asked questions

What snacks can you make in an air fryer?

Samosas, pakodas, cutlets, tikkas, fries, wedges, chana, peanuts, makhana, banana chips, nuggets, onion rings and bread pizza all work well. Thin-batter fritters and loose leafy snacks don’t.

Can you make pakoras in an air fryer?

Yes, if the batter is thick enough to hold its shape. Paneer, onion and gobi pakodas work best. See our paneer pakoda method.

Are air fryer snacks healthy?

They’re lower in fat than deep-fried versions because they use far less oil. Roasted chana, peanuts and paneer snacks also add protein. See healthy air fryer recipes.

Can I cook frozen snacks in the air fryer?

Yes, straight from frozen — no oil needed for most. Check the cooking time chart for frozen samosas, nuggets and more.
