Air Fryer Health & Safety

Is an air fryer actually healthier? Is the coating safe? Can you put foil, glass or silicone inside? This hub answers the health and safety questions we get asked most, with links to the detailed article on each one.

Is air frying healthy? The short answer

Air frying cooks food with fast-moving hot air, so you need a teaspoon or two of oil instead of the litres used for deep frying. That cuts the fat and calories that come from frying oil. It does not make every food healthy, though. A frozen, processed snack is still a processed snack. The biggest wins come from making foods you would otherwise deep-fry, such as samosas, pakoras, cutlets and fries, with a fraction of the oil.

Acrylamide and cancer concerns

Acrylamide is a compound that forms when starchy foods like potatoes and bread are cooked at high temperatures until very brown. It forms in any high-heat cooking, not only in air fryers. Food-safety agencies such as the UK Food Standards Agency advise aiming for a golden colour rather than dark brown or burnt. For air frying, that means:

  • Cook potatoes to golden, not dark brown.
  • Soak cut potatoes in water for 15–30 minutes and dry them before air frying.
  • Avoid charring; lower the temperature for longer cooks.

Non-stick coatings (PTFE/Teflon)

Most air fryer baskets use a PTFE-based non-stick coating. PFOA, the chemical that caused most of the historical concern, was phased out of non-stick manufacturing by major producers by 2015. PTFE itself is stable at normal cooking temperatures. It starts to break down only well above the roughly 200–230 °C maximum of most air fryers. Practical tips:

What can you safely put in an air fryer?

Material Safe? Notes Details
Aluminium foil Yes, with care Weigh it down with food and do not cover the whole basket; avoid with very acidic foods Foil in an air fryer
Parchment paper Yes Only with food on top so it cannot fly into the heating element Accessories
Oven-safe glass Yes Tempered/borosilicate only; avoid sudden temperature changes Glass in an air fryer
Silicone moulds Yes Food-grade, oven-safe silicone rated above your cooking temperature Silicone moulds
Plastic No Will melt and release fumes Plastic in an air fryer
Water (for cleaning) Basket only Never pour water into the main unit Cleaning with water

Appliance safety

Golden rules: leave 10–15 cm of space around the vents, plug directly into a wall socket rather than an extension board, never leave it running unattended for long cooks, and clean out grease regularly.

Microwave safety questions

Frequently asked questions

Is air-fried food healthier than deep-fried food?

Generally yes, because it uses much less oil, which lowers fat and calories. The overall healthiness still depends on what you cook. See is an air fryer healthy?

Can I put aluminium foil in my air fryer?

Yes, as long as it is weighed down by food and does not block airflow. Never preheat with loose foil inside. Full guide: aluminium foil in air fryer: safe or not.

Is it safe to leave an air fryer on unattended?

Short cooks with the timer set are low risk. For longer cooks, stay nearby, keep vents clear and do not use it under cabinets.
